Where and when were you founded?
AM.Gemi was founded in March of 2015 with primary offices in Florence, Italy and Boston, Massachusetts.

What is the brand all about?
AM.Gemi is the first postluxury brand, meaning we embrace the very best of luxury and old-world craftsmanship, but bring a fresh approach to newness and access. We handcraft shoes in the best specialty factories across Italy. For women, we introduce new styles in limited editions every Monday. For men, we update our shoe and belt selection according to the season and when the moment feels right for something new. We’ve edited out the middleman and sell directly to clients, which allows us to offer the highest quality shoes and belts at surprisingly attainable prices.

Where does the name M.Gemi come from?
AOur name is inspired by a member of our founding team, Maria Gangemi, a devotee to the art of fine Italian shoemaking and the artisans who practice it. Maria grew up in Sicily, learning the shoe trade directly from the best in the business, and now has a hand in all of our design.

Where are the shoes and belts made?
AWe source the best specialty factories all over Italy for every style we produce, seeking out specialists in moccasins, pumps, loafers, belts, and more, wherever they ply their craft. Pisa, Ancona, Napoli, Toscana—these are just of a few of the places where we’ve found expert artisans to create M.Gemi shoes and belts. Our offerings are not just assembled in Italy, but conceived, designed, sourced, patterned, lasted, stitched, and finished there. A real person, someone passionate and trained (and in our case, Italian), has contributed to the making of every pair, which includes hand-sewn uppers, hand-painted edges, and hand-cut leather.

What is your design philosophy?
AAbove all, modern style. We have a collaborative design team that includes M.Gemi Italian and American design talent and “modellistas”—experts who work in our artisanal factories and know the best lines and leathers. We constantly have our eyes open to what’s inspiring in color, shape, and beyond. For women’s shoes, we crave freshness—from a unique twist on a trend like color blocking, to unexpected materials like “under glass” leather, to our insistence on showing clients something new weekly. For our men’s shoes, we focus on new, inspired design married with old-world quality, value innovation, and great looks over fleeting fads.

How often do you release new M.Gemi shoes?
AWe live, breathe, and think shoes, so when we created M.Gemi, we set out to offer something new to our clients (almost) as often as we want new shoes. We share our shoe obsession weekly and seasonally. M.Gemi offers new women’s shoes every week (called editions), and new men’s shoes just when he wants them—when the season changes, or we discover new materials and styles that inspire us.

What materials do you use?
AWhen it comes to material selection, we’re focused on beauty, quality, and comfort. All of our soles and socks are leather, which ensures softness and durability. Our heels are usually leather or leewood, or rubber for certain casual styles. For uppers, we are constantly thinking about innovation, looking for new treatments, materials, and design elements—whether it’s pearlized patent leather, hand-antiqued calfskin, water-resistant nubuck, textured saffiano, bright rubber soles, perforation, or studs. Our belts are made with only the very best materials; genuine alligator skin, pebbled leather, and calfskin leathers. All of our belts are lined in supple nubuck for comfort and durability. Buckles are solid brass in a variety of finishes.

What do I need to know about fit?
AFirst, we offer free shipping and returns so there is no risk in trying more than one pair in the comfort of your home. M.Gemi shoes are sized according to Italian sizing, which is more exact than U.S. sizing. If you know your Italian size, that’s a good place to start. We also offer a fit tool on the site to help you land on the perfect size. We provide fit notes for our shoes on the site based on design (some start out snug but are designed to stretch for a custom fit) and based on feedback from our staff testers who try out every shoe. Fit is also a matter of preference. Clients should generally size up for a looser fit (or possibly a wider foot) and down if a snug fit is preferred. Tell me about the sizing of your belts.
AWe offer men’s belts in even sizes from 28 to 48. M.Gemi belts are custom cut after you place your order. You choose your size, and one of our artisans cuts your belt for a perfect fit. Your belt size corresponds to your pants size; just add two inches. If you are a 34 waist, you would order a size 36 belt. (And though we do not presently offer belts for women, we know a few who love our men’s belts).

What is a “forma”?
AEach shoe has a different construction, or forma, according to its style. The forma determines the height, pitch, and general fit of the shoe. We frequently craft new styles on the same forma. Once you find a forma that fits you well, you can seek out other looks built on that forma.

How should I care for my M.Gemi purchase?
ACaring for your M.Gemi shoes will not only keep them looking newer for longer, but extend their overall longevity. Carrying your shoes on the go? Make sure to use the M.Gemi dust bag that arrives with each pair. Our insider tip: bring your M.Gemi shoes to a cobbler on a regular basis—they’ll be able to give you the most personalized care tips for your shoes!

How do I clean my M.Gemi shoes?
AYou may want to care for and clean your M.Gemi shoes in-between cobbler visits depending on the upper material. Nappa leather: To buff out light wear and to shine the leather, use a neutral shoe cream and a clean, soft cloth. Patent leather: To buff out light wear, use a patent leather cleaner and a clean, soft cloth. Suede: To clean and remove light scuff marks, gently sweep with a dry suede shampoo brush after wearing. (For more prominent marks, use a suede eraser.)

Do you suggest any particular brand of care products?
AWhile we don’t suggest any one particular brand of shoe care products, make sure to ask your cobbler. They’ll be able to let you know what products work best for them (and for your shoes!).

My shoes are a bit snug, will they break in?
AYour M.Gemi shoes will mold to the width of your foot with every wear. The amount of breaking in varies by material, as well as style. (Make sure to read the fit tips on each product page as different styles may require going up or down a half size for proper fit!)

What’s the best care for a point-toe shoe?
AOur point-toe shoes, like all of our shoes, are made of authentic, very high quality leather. Unlike synthetic materials, this leather will naturally show wear. In order to preserve your point toes, we suggest bringing them to your cobbler before their first wear. (Some shoe aficionados like to do this for all shoe types.) Everyone walks a bit differently, and your cobbler can help best protect your shoes from everyday wear. If you plan on walking in your point toes often, we suggest having a cobbler place rubber tabs on the toe tips.

Why are the soles of my shoes a bit slippery?
AMost M.Gemi shoes feature all-leather soles (some styles come with a rubber insert for traction and added durability). We love the beauty of our leather soles—each one is different and will wear uniquely. Because of the all-leather sole, initial wear may be slightly slippery, but will disappear quickly as the sole starts to wear. If preferred, your cobbler can place a thin rubber sole on your M.Gemi shoes (this helps keep them from slipping, and extends the life of the leather sole underneath!).

What is your shipping policy?
A

M.Gemi offers free ground shipping and free returns on every purchase. We can’t wait for you to get your hands on and feet into your M.Gemi shoes, so we make it a priority to expedite the shipping process. Orders are processed and sent out as quickly as possible. Depending on what time you place your order, it could be sent out as soon as one business day. Generally, we ship to Alaska and Hawaii with Second Day Air (with a surcharge), but we don’t currently offer ground shipping to these destinations. You can also take a look at our shipping map. Our business was built in part because of the void we saw for handcrafted Italian shoes in the United States, so we don’t currently ship outside the country. How soon will my M.Gemi purchase arrive?

We know (and love) that you can’t wait to get your new shoes. During the ordering procedure, we will inform you of the estimated time required for delivery, as well as the various forms of delivery available. Please refer to our Terms and Conditions for more details.

We want you to love every single M.Gemi purchase, so we make returns free and as easy as possible. You have 14 days from the date of delivery to return anything that’s not just what you were looking for, unless noted at the time of purchase. As long as it has not yet shipped, we can cancel your order—just call us at 844.574.4364. However, we try to send orders along quickly, so it is not always possible to cancel your order. When can I expect my refund?

 After your item is received and inspected, your refund will be processed and a credit will be automatically applied to your credit card or original method of payment. Depending on your credit card company, it may take an additional 2-10 business days after your credit is applied to post to your account. If you provided your email address, we will keep you informed of when we receive and process your return. Of course, please feel free to call if you have any questions. Please note, private sale returns will be credited in the form of an M.Gemi eGift Card.

Do you offer exchanges?
AYes. In order to make an exchange for a different size or color, give us a call at 844.574.GEMI or email us at assistant@mgemi.com. We’ll check our inventory for the size and style you’re looking for and help you through the exchange process. We provide free shipping and free returns, so if you are in-between sizes or unsure of your size, you can order multiple pairs risk-free and return anything that isn’t perfect.

Do you ever have sales?

We rarely, if ever, have sales on our M.Gemi shoes, for two reasons. First, we are already making a super premium, handcrafted Italian offering available at attainable prices – by working directly with specialty factories and selling direct to clients. Second, because of the level of artistry involved in crafting our shoes, we produce them in small batches and find that they generally sell out.

Why am I being charged tax?
A

M.Gemi collects sales taxes where required by law. In instances where M.Gemi is not required to collect taxes, clients are responsible for determining and paying sales taxes on their own. Each state’s tax laws specify what purchases are subject to sales tax. For more information please refer to our Tax Policy

The shoes I want are sold out! Is there anything I can do?

As shoe experts who understand the value of the perfect pair, we feel for you. Our shoes disappear quickly because we offer our styles in small batches (due to the craftsmanship involved) and for a limited time, so we can continually offer something new. M.Gemi clients become adept at securing what they want—they know that new women’s styles arrive each week and men’s styles change with the seasons. To secure favorites quickly, and that our free shipping and returns allow them to go ahead and purchase without risk. Now that you know these tips, we hope you get exactly what you want the next time.

What is the Wait List?
AThe Wait List is the best possible way to obtain a sold out shoe. It’s easy; we just need an email address so we can contact you. If the shoe become available, you will be personally notified, giving you first-hand access to purchase the shoe you missed. The Wait List is based off of returns, so there is no guarantee that it will come back in stock.

We happen to think shoes make an amazing gift! Our shoebox makes for an impressive presentation, and it’s simple to fill out a gift message when you check out. If you know your giftee’s M.Gemi size, fit is easy—we fit test every shoe and provide extensive details on how each style runs to make sure you get the best fit (you can find this information below the section where you choose the color and size of the shoe you want). You can also determine the size to choose with our Fit Assistant. If you get the size wrong, no worries: returns are free and simple. And of course, a gift card is always well received.

By utilizing our no hassle, free shipping program, M.Gemi customers have the ability to do good simply by donating a pair of gently used shoes through one of our partner charities—currently, local chapters of Dress for Success, an organization that provides a curated boutique of donated professional clothing and accessories for women in need to wear to job interviews, free of charge, and Career Gear, which provides career clothing, shoes and accessories to help promote the economic independence of lower-income men. A pre-paid poly bag is included with every M.Gemi purchase. If you decide to participate, simply choose a pair of shoes to donate, insert them into the bag, and mail them out.

Is my donation tax deductible?

The IRS rules regarding the ability to deduct donations of clothing are complex. In most situations you will be able to deduct the fair market value of gently used qualifying shoes. Please refer to Information on donated property for donors and Publication 526 for more information.

Will I get a receipt?
AM.Gemi facilitates donations by providing marketing support, access to our clients, and fully paid shipping and handling. However, since we are not physically involved with the donated item, it is not practical to provide a receipt to every client. Please use the IRS links above for instructions on how to document your donation.
