The Novella's story begins in a very small and intimate family-owned factory in Napoli where sandals are their specialty and no detail gets overlooked. When we met the husband-and-wife team, we admitted our love for the very shoes she had been wearing, and even though that style was not in production, they worked with us directly to craft a version—specially for us—that captured the unique blend of luxury and sparingness, upscale and easy, telling the
most compelling story in just
a few strokes.
All of our shoes have a story, but this one
happens to be very short and sweet.
Meet the Novella.
e look for inspiration everywhere. This time, we found it in Milan, where we went to check out small factories in search of a specialist in casual sandals. We ended up falling in love with a simple pair one factory owner was wearing, and we used them as a starting point for this design.
Using the owner's own Euro-chic insouciance as inspiration, we wanted the most unfettered details; the slimmest straps—one across the toes and one around the ankle—and a sleek, uninterrupted back counter. Just enough support without getting in the way of the barely-there appeal we wanted to capture. We made one in silver specchio, another in beige patent, and three in a luxurious satin—an unusual material for a sandal, but done as a special favor to us because we fell in love with the fabric when the owner wore it and knew it would give off the “sprezzatura” (that's Italian for effortless chic,
we learned) that we were looking for./w/all-shoes/the-novella/08_1076_01.html/#!/color/670
We broke all the rules with this sandal, so we don't plan on paring down its specialness by wearing it in an obvious way. The silver pair will preserve the lushness and light of kimono tops, silken Ts, and lounge pants. The beige patent version will echo the breeziness of our filmiest dresses on hot summer nights. And we'll contrast the satin—black, bright fuchsia, or royal blue—with rolled boyfriend denim, just like our style muse.
